Design Conversion Fails...and how to avoid

Design is part art, part conversion. It’s no good having something looking pretty but fails to focus on the goal of conversion. On the flipside, an ugly design with an intrusive CTA can also put customers off. It’s all about a balance that’s right for your customer’s needs, business goals and brand.

Here are a few common design conversion fails (via Dribbble) and ways they can be avoided:

▪️ Relying too heavily on stock imagery (even when it’s high-quality)

  • Opt for a mix of custom design together with stock imagery to strike a balance especially on your homepage which will determine keeping or losing customers

▪️ Not allowing enough room to emphasize social proof

  • Social proof builds trust so why wouldn’t you display this? Consider extracts from testimonials vs full quotes and maybe display as an image vs text

▪️ Overlooking the mobile experience

  • Mobile deserves as much attention as desktop and getting this right will help lead to conversions

▪️ Using too many CTAs in a cluttered environment

  • Make sure each page has a clear CTA, if this isn’t clear initially then reevaluate your design

▪️ Ignoring the user’s goal (and taste)

  • Your taste may not be the same as your user - start by understanding who they are, what they like and their tastes. This is key to keeping them engaged on your site.

▪️ Failing to balance design with valuable information

  • Design works in conjunction with your copy, the moment they are separated your brand consistency will be lost

▪️ Taking loading speeds for granted

  • Data compression tools are your best friend here!

▪️ Forgetting the value of consistency through the customer journey

  • Set your brand guidelines and don’t fall astray from this...consistent experiences matter most
