Here are some useful tips from Kevin Indig’s article on Medium as to ‘how startups should do SEO.’

🔸 Build the right reputation in the search results

  • Your website should clearly define your brand - start with a strong online presence explaining clearly what you do, show your product and tell your story

  • Build a defence that pushes negative results further down which means a) building a presence on other sites that rank for your brand and b) creating assets on your own site that you can control. A key tip is avoiding setting up a presence on a channel and not being active on it, this won’t help your ranking

🔸 Find and control threats to your product

  • Address comparison queries ‘brand x vs your brand’ by either building your own page to list out your USPs or write an article that looks at this. This is especially key as it’s the point where users either jump ship or stay on-board

  • By listening and searching what’s out there you’ll discover new competitors and threats allowing you to address them with new content

🔸 Accelerate the authority of your startup

  • Authority and relevance are key to SEO - this is where natural backlinks kicks in

  • It will appear natural to Google if it’s done with the right pace, right ratio and right relevancy to your industry

  • Consider sharing news with relevant industry publishers, invite guest articles and blog about your own brand via your site such as a ‘behind the scenes’

🔸 Scale user acquisition exponentially

  • When creating content consider separating it out into the information, consideration and conversion stage so you’re addressing the users every touchpoint

  • Make sure each piece focuses on the users intent, outstanding content and easy consumption of information

🔸 Focus on the right SEO opportunities

  • Be it technical optimisation, backlinks and content - work out what’s right for your industry

  • Consider targeted outreach - influencers or hubs in your industry

Ultimately work out what is relevant to your industry and business model and accordingly generate an SEO strategy that fits this so your time is spent effectively.
